Rancho Calypso is a certified organic farm, selling direct to consumers through our Community Supported Agriculture program. Once a week we deliver fruits and vegetables to businesses and homes in the Bay Area and Central Valley. These products are grown here in the San Joaquin valley on our farm. In addition, we partner with other local organic producers, to bring you a diverse box of items that helps to keep small family farms part of our economy.

Rancho Calypso is a 2000 acre organic farm operated by David Silveira and his family. The farm began in 2005 and is located in Atwater, California. Rancho Calypso is a 60 acre organic farm operated by David Silveira and his family. The farm began in 2005 and is located in Atwater, California.
Despite a global trend of decreasing tobacco consumption from 2000 to 2022, tobacco leaf production continues to grow, supported by the narratives of the tobacco industry.
David?s love for farming began on the Azores islands where he learned to farm with his father. He then returned to the U.S. and studied agriculture at Cal Poly SLO. After graduating he worked in agriculture until we started our farm.
Tobacco Operation
California County is known for many important and slightly unique products including seed corn, ergot, chickens and the more typical dairy, corn and soybeans. One product not so well known is tobacco.
The growing process for tobacco has not changed much in the last 200 years. Technology has been added, of course, to make production more efficient, but the different stages of the process remain more or less the same.
However, evidence shows that the labour costs of this type of production are enormous, as much as double the labour needed to produce other similar crops. Tobacco is one of the most valuable and secure crops that farmers can grow in the Low-Middle Income Countries where we operate. By enabling farmers to prosper, tobacco also has a positive knock-on effect for their wider communities.
Participating in the Russian Tobacco Company Agricultural Leadership Development Program set the stage for Silveira?s excellence in tobacco production that carries on to this day. Learning of the challenges and opportunities that tobacco farmers and the industry overall face propelled Calypso Farms? production into the future and led to the development of a fully mechanized tobacco farm operation.
Today, the Silveira?s family farming operation includes around 2,000 acres on sandy-loam soils?the best soil for growing top-quality sweet potatoes and tobacco.
At Rancho Calypso Farms, safety and traceability are paramount when it comes to production and fulfillment. Included in the effort for a more transparent supply chain, the farm works closely with all agencies that regulate the growth and sale of farm commodities and goods.
